A 19th Century French Black Forest Rose Carved Box With Scent Bottles
- Description
A rare and beautifully detailed Black Forest carved antique wooden scent casket/box dating to the late 19th century (circa 1870–1890). This striking piece features deep, high-relief carvings of roses, leaves, and trailing vines, wrapping intricately around all sides and the lid. Hand-carved in the Black Forest region (Switzerland/Germany) and likely created for the French luxury market.
The hinged lid opens to a fitted interior containing four elegant glass scent bottles, each with faceted stoppers and delicate gold engraving (gilded decoration). The bottles are housed in their original compartments.
The casket also retains its original working key, a wonderful and increasingly rare feature that adds to its authenticity and charm. Originally intended for use on a vanity or dressing table, this scent casket would have held perfumes or essences.
