This exquisite late 18th century grey agate and gild metal French rococo nécessaire is dated circa 1760. Tapering rectangular case of grey agate has domed top and base is beautifully decorated with pierced gilt-metal mounts with scrolls, foliage, flowerheads and rocaille. The case is fitted with a gem-set push piece. The inside of the case is fitted with a decorative folding knife, toothpick, and one other implement. A rare and unique French object d'art from Louis XVI-era.
Period: Late 18th century, circa 1760
Measurements: approx 138mm x 75mm (top) and 69 (bottom), 103 grams
Condition: Wear and scratches due to age, a few hairlines, and a tiny crack on the back approx. 1 cm, tiny loss to the agate on the back (bottom of the case)
