Antique Japanese Meiji Shakudo Gold And Silver Brooch
- Description
This exquisite antique Japanese brooch is a fine example of shakudo metalwork from the Meiji period (1868–1912) — a time celebrated for exceptional craftsmanship and innovative mixed-metal techniques. Beautifully crafted in a combination of shakudo (a copper and gold alloy), silver, and gold highlights, the brooch showcases a richly detailed scene.
At its centre, two geisha are seated on the floor, one of them feeding a quail (uzura), a motif deeply rooted in Japanese symbolism. Traditionally kept for fighting, the quail represents courage and fighting spirit in Japanese culture. Additional refined details include a cherry blossom (sakura), a timeless emblem of beauty and transience and a folding fan, enhancing the poetic and seasonal atmosphere of the design. The outer frame is silver, providing a beautiful contrast to the dark patina of the shakudo and the warm gold accents.
