Antique Théodore Deck ‘Bleu Deck’ Large Turquoise Vase ca. 1867

£15,000.00

An exceptional example of Théodore Deck’s most iconic work, glazed in his celebrated turquoise bleu Deck and conceived in the Chinese manner. An applied lion-mask with a suspended ring enhances the architectural presence of the piece, an especially desirable motif within Deck’s oeuvre. The glaze is exceptionally deep and luminous, demonstrating the tonal variation and technical refinement that distinguished Deck’s mature production.

This vase is closely related to Chinese ceramic originals of the 18th century, both in its baluster form, decorative programme, and distinctive turquoise glaze. Those Qing-period interpretations were themselves derived from much earlier Chinese ritual bronze vessels of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, whose archaic geometric ornament and mask-head motifs served as the primary source of inspiration.

This 19th century large vase was made circa 1867. The same vase is preserved in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Please check their website for the reference.

Measurements:
Height: 33cm
Width: 13.5cm
Circumference: 74cm

Condition:
The vase was previously adapted as a lamp in the mid-20th century. A small circular opening is present on the underside of the base where wiring was inserted. There is a small amount of old glue residue on the underside where the wooden lamp's base was attached. Some age-related hairlines and a few small minor chips consistent with the age. Otherwise a great antique condition.
