Antique Victorian sterling silver locket dated 1876. This extraordinary silver locket is hallmarked for Birmingham and made by Horace Woodward & Co. The front depicts a Japonesque-style scene, a heron in the centre of the piece standing among bulrushes. In Japanese culture, this bird represents a noble and graceful appearance. Herons are considered to be a symbol of divinity as well.
This is a typical aesthetic movement motif, and this beautiful locket is a lovely example of its period. This exquisite locket has delicate engraved detail, and it presents beautifully when worn. It opens to reveal two picture compartments.
Condition: light surface scratches, wear, and a couple of dings to the front and especially to the reverse ( Please see attached images). The locket closes nicely with a click
